BALLYMENA, SATURDAY 28^TH SEPTEMBER 2024

The first of the seasonal suckled calf sales at Ballymena Mart attracted an excellent entry of 580 calves. The quality of the calves on offer was exceptional and this was reflected in an outstanding trade. Top price of the day was £5100 paid to Ivan Lynn, Armoy for a fantastic roan heifer and Ivan took a clean sweep in the Limousin show where Packie Donnelly awarded him first, second and third in both bullock and heifer sections. The Charolais Club took a different approach this year with prizemoney being awarded to the bullock and heifer fetching the top price per kilo and the best average price for a pen of 5. Top price in the Charolais section went to D Convery, Cushendun who received 485p/kilo for his bullock and M&R Simpson Broughshane won the heifer section with their heifer selling to 615p/kilo. The winners of the best average for a pen of 5 Charolais calves went to McAfee Bros for their pen of heifers which fetched 459p/kilo as an average over the 5 calves. The first of the season's suckler heifer sales at Ballymena Mart saw an excellent offering of 60 top quality heifers from Ryan Burnside Donaghmore. Ryan had gone the extra mile and calved 42 of the heifers and put up a tremendous show of top quality heifers which sold to a top of 3800 for a black heifer with calf at foot and 3750 for a lovely roan heifer with calf. His springers sold to a top of 3350 for tremendous red heifer in calf to the Limousin and due October. With a complete clearance the heifers with calves at foot averaged £3030 and the in calf heifers averaged £2820. Leading prices were as follows:- 3800, 3750, 3600, 3600, 3450, 3400, 3350,3350,3350.

Just under 200 suckler calves presented at the last calf sale this year. Bullocks sold to £1060 over for a char 290kg at £1350 offered by S Taylor, Ligoniel. Heifers sold to £730 over for a Char 310kg £1040 presented by A Millar, Antrim.

An entry of 670 suckled calves at the opening calf sale resulted in a terrific trade. A show was held for Limousin and Charolais calves. Ivan Lynn & Sons, Armoy dominated the Limousin section winning 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd in heifers and bullocks. SUCKLED CALF SALE SEPTEMBER 2022

The first of the season’s special suckled calf sales at Ballymena Mart saw an entry of 600 top quality calves with all records broken selling to a top of £9000 paid to S Gowdy N’abbey for an outstanding Belgian Blue X heifer weighing 310kgs and with tremendous show potential. Second top price of £4000 was paid to Nugent Estates Portaferry for a Limousin heifer also weighing in at 310kgs. Charolais heifers sold to £3400 paid to McAfee Bros. Bushmills who also took the top price in the bullock section selling a 490kg calf at £1700.Top price per kilo in the bullock section was paid to V McErlaine Armoy for a super Charolais calf 360kgs at £1370 (3.81p/kg). Prior to the sale a show of Charolais and Limousin calves was held and judged by B Finnegan and K Diamond respectively. Both Limousin sections were won by Ivan Lynn Armoy and both Charolais sections were won by McAfee Bros.
